AL Scorecard 2021-2022

The following scorecard lists several key votes in the Alabama Legislature in 2021-2022 and ranks their State Senators and House Representatives based on their fidelity to (U.S.) constitutional and limited-government principles.

This is our first state-level Scorecard; the selected votes may not be reflective of legislators’ overall records. Their cumulative scores will change as we add more votes. Please check regularly for updates.

House of Representatives

1. Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act

Good Vote: Yes

SB184 Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act (Passed 66 to 28 on 4/7/2022). Prohibits the use of puberty blockers and gender-affirming surgeries for minors and makes it a felony for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers to minors.

2. Second Amendment Preservation Act

Good Vote: Yes

SB2 Second Amendment Preservation Act (Passed 68 to 28 on 4/7/2022).  Forbids law enforcement and state actors from implementing or enforcing executive orders regarding firearms.

3. General Fund Budget

Good Vote: No

SB106 General Fund Budget (Passed 101 to 0 on 3/31/2022). Largest general fund budget in Alabama state history at $2.7 billion due to federal COVID-19 funding.

4. Constitutional Carry

Good Vote: Yes

HB272 Constitutional Carry (Passed 70 to 29 on 3/10/2022). Eliminates the requirement to obtain a permit in order to carry a concealed handgun.

5. Election Integrity

Good Vote: Yes

HB194 Election Integrity (Passed 72 to 28 on 3/10/2022). Prohibits the use of private donations to fund election costs and expenses (Zuckerbucks).

6. Vaccine Exemptions

Good Vote: Yes

SB 9 Vaccine Exemption (Passed 75 to 27 on 11/11/2021). Requires that employers and contractors to allow medical or religious exemptions from the COVID vaccine.
