The following scorecard lists several key votes in the Alabama Legislature in 2021-2022 and ranks their State Senators and House Representatives based on their fidelity to (U.S.) constitutional and limited-government principles.

This is our first state-level Scorecard; the selected votes may not be reflective of legislators’ overall records. Their cumulative scores will change as we add more votes. Please check regularly for updates.

Senate

1. Election Integrity

Good Vote: Yes

HB194 Election Integrity (Passed 25 to 7 on 4/7/2022). Prohibits the use of private donations to fund election costs and expenses (Zuckerbucks).

2. Second Amendment Preservation Act

Good Vote: Yes

SB2 Second Amendment Preservation Act (Passed 23 to 5 on 4/7/2022). Forbids law enforcement and state actors from implementing or enforcing executive orders regarding firearms.

3. General Fund Budget

Good Vote: No

SB106 General Fund Budget (Passed 29 to 0 on 3/30/2022). Largest general fund budget in Alabama state history at $2.7 billion due to federal COVID-19 funding.

4. Constitutional Carry

Good Vote: Yes

HB272 Constitutional Carry (Passed 24 to 6 on 3/10/2022). Eliminates the requirement to obtain a permit in order to carry a concealed handgun.

5. Vaccine Mandates

Good Vote: Yes

SB15 Vaccine Mandates (Passed 25 to 1 on 11/4/2021). Requires that minors receive parental consent before getting a COVID vaccine and prevents educational institutions from asking about a minor’s vaccination status.

6. Second Amendment Protection Act

Good Vote: Yes

SB358 Second Amendment Protection Act (Passed 22 to 5 on 4/15/2021). Makes it illegal for state or local governments to enforce any federal gun law of presidential executive order that violates the 2nd Amendment.
