SB1474 would allow labor unions to mandate membership in their unions, thus undermining the liberty and agency from employees who may not be interested in joining a union. This bill would also prohibit any local government from creating right-to-work laws, which would prevent this.
The Illinois State House of Representatives passed SB1474 on May 28, 2019 by a vote of 101 to 8. We have assigned pluses to the nays because this legislation forces unions upon people who may not want to be involved in one. The bill also takes power away from local government and puts it into the hands of the state and labor unions. We believe in freedom for businesses and do not think government should overstep the Constitution by taking away the choice of union membership.
