The following scorecard lists several key votes in the New Jersey Legislature in 2020-2022 and ranks their assemblymen and senators based on their fidelity to (U.S.) constitutional and limited government principles.
The selected votes may not be reflective of legislators’ overall records. Their cumulative scores will change as we add more votes. Please check regularly for updates.
Senate
1. Late-Term Abortions
S49 Late-Term Abortions (Passed by 23 to 15 on 1/10/22). Codifies into law an absolute "right" to abortion in New Jersey, including late-term abortion, and abortions performed by non-physicians.
2. Same-Sex Marriage
S3687 Same-Sex Marriage (Passed 35 to 4 on 12/20/2021). Legally affirms the right to same-sex marriage in the state of New Jersey.
3. Affirmative Action Police Hiring
A2394 Affirmative Action Police Hiring (Passed 32 to 5 on 12/20/2021). A2394 creates recruitment and selection programs to increase police hirings of women and minorities, with a reporting requirement.
4. Cancel the Con-Con
SCR161 Cancel the Con-Con (Passed 24 to 10 on 12/2/2021). Rescinds New Jersey’s prior resolutions calling on Congress to organize a constitutional convention.
5. Teaching Critical Race Theory to Teachers
S2834 Teaching Critical Race Theory to Teachers (Passed 25 to 7 on 2/19/2021). Mandates individuals seeking a teaching certification be trained in "culturally responsive teaching," a movement linked to critical race theory.
6. Banning Grocery Bags
S864 Banning Grocery Bags (Passed 22 to 14 on 3/5/2020). Bans or sharply limits consumer access to single-use plastic bags, paper bags, straws, and foam food containers.
